Custom Fields

The Custom Fields tab gives you the flexibility to extend the default form fields of your popups. While the built-in popup types like Contact Form, Subscription, and Subscribe and Get a File already include standard fields such as Name, Email, and Message, sometimes your business needs more specific information from users. That’s where custom fields come in.

With this feature, you can create any additional input field you want: such as Phone Number, Company Name, Job Title, and make them available inside your popups. Once created, these fields appear as placeholders that can be enabled or disabled in the User Data Fields section when you’re setting up a form-based popup.

Adding a New Custom Field #

  • Go to Popup Box > Custom Fields from your WordPress Dashboard. This is where you can manage all your extra fields.

  • Click on the Add New Button.

When you click “Add New” in the Custom Fields tab, a form opens. Here you can configure all the details of your new field.

Adding New Custom Field
  • Name – This is the label of your custom field. It’s what users will see inside your popup form (e.g., “Phone Number” or “Company Name”).
  • Slug – A unique identifier automatically generated for the field (e.g., popup_attr_1). This is used internally by the system. In most cases, you don’t need to edit this, but you can if you want to use a more descriptive slug.
  • Type – Choose the kind of input field you want to add.

    Supported types include:
Text – Single-line input for short responses (e.g., First Name, City).
Textarea – Multi-line input for longer messages or comments.
E-Mail – Collects email addresses and validates the format.
Number – Restricts input to numbers only (e.g., Age, Quantity).
Telephone – Designed for phone numbers with appropriate input formatting.
URL – For collecting website or social media links.
Select – Dropdown menu where users choose one option from a list.
Checkbox – Allows yes/no or multiple selection inputs.
  • Attribute Status – Decide whether the field is Published (available for use in your popups) or Unpublished (saved but hidden from popup creation until later).
  • Save Options
Save and Close – Saves the new field and returns you to the list of custom fields.
Save – Saves the new field but keeps the form open in case you want to continue editing.

Once you’ve saved the field, it will be added to your custom field list and become available when configuring User Data Fields in relevant popup types (e.g., Contact Form, Subscription, Subscribe & Get a File).
Collecting User Data

Example Use Cases #

  • Collect Phone Numbers
Add a phone field to subscription popups to follow up with subscribers through SMS campaigns or phone calls.
  • Company & Role Details
Perfect for B2B lead generation—ask for “Company Name” and “Job Title” alongside the email to qualify leads faster.
  • Event Registrations
Add dropdowns for “Preferred Session” or “Dietary Requirements” in event signup popups.
  • Marketing Preferences
Insert checkboxes that let users select interests, such as “Newsletters,” “Product Updates,” or “Special Offers,” helping you segment your list.
  • Feedback Forms
Go beyond the default message box by including extra rating fields (e.g., satisfaction scale, yes/no checkboxes).

Best Practices #

  • Keep it User-Friendly – Too many fields can discourage users from submitting the form. Only collect what is truly necessary.
  • Use Clear Labels – Make sure field names are descriptive and easy to understand (e.g., “Your Phone Number” instead of just “Phone”).
  • Plan Ahead – Think about how you’ll use the data. For example, if you’re running SMS campaigns, always include a required phone field.
  • Test Your Setup – After adding new fields, preview the popup to ensure everything looks good on desktop and mobile.
  • Combine with Reports & Submissions – Review your collected data in the Submissions and Reports tabs to measure results and improve targeting.

By using custom fields, you can transform your popups into fully tailored data-collection tools. Whether you’re building a detailed contact form, qualifying leads for your business, or running surveys, this feature ensures you gather the exact information you need.
